Sustainability in the Cigarette Butt Collection Program

The sustainability of the programs we implement is a fundamental principle for our organization! This commitment is also reflected in the program we are carrying out with the support of BAT Hellas in the regions of Rafina and Naxos.

Our recent visits to the two members of the Blue Municipalities Network aimed to inspect and maintain the infrastructure, as well as to monitor the results generated by the program.

In both cases, we carried out repairs and maintenance of the collectors and informative signs, as wear and tear should be expected after five years of project implementation. Apart from this, the messages regarding the program’s effectiveness and citizens’ engagement were entirely positive. To date, 555,800 cigarette butts have been collected in Naxos, while in Rafina the corresponding number amounts to 290,400 cigarette butts.

This outcome is particularly satisfying given the complexity and innovation of the program, which included numerous activities throughout its implementation. Five years later, we can confidently say that the program proved its added value, addressed existing needs and was embraced by the local communities.

We move forward emphasizing once again that, as an organization, we place as much importance on the sustainability of our interventions as we do on the implementation of our programs!
