We visited schools on the island of Kea with the aim of informing and raising awareness within the student community about the protection of Posidonia seagrass meadows. The activities we carried out across all the schools on the island brought us great joy, as we observed the students’ increased interest in the “forests” of the sea.
This initiative is just one of the nine pillars of the “Blue Lungs” program that we are implementing on the island of Kea with the support of Zurich Group Germany and in collaboration with the municipal authorities, the Hellenic Centre for Marine Research, and the organization Team Malizia.
The activities included presentations and experiential workshops specifically designed around marine pollution, the critical role played by Posidonia seagrass meadows, and the need to protect them. At the same time, students were not only informed about the holistic project being implemented on their island, but were also invited to contribute to its successful completion by raising awareness among their friends, family members and visitors.
The program implemented in Kea is already attracting the interest of national institutions and international media, as it is the first holistic program carried out in Greece. It includes a wide range of activities based on the principles of information, education, awareness, prevention and restoration of the marine environment.
Our goal is for this program to become a model for other members of the Blue Municipalities Network. And the students confirmed in the best possible way that our expectations are indeed realistic!
