Joining forces with the Municipality of Antiparos for tap water
Another initiative to promote tap water and reduce bottled water consumption has been successfully completed in Antiparos!
It was the spring of 2024 when representatives of our organization met with Mr. Faroupos, Mayor of Antiparos, to discuss a program aimed at promoting tap water. A program funded by Nina Schnabel, a German citizen, who once again demonstrated her genuine interest in Greece! At the same time, the municipal authorities, by approving the plan we discussed, also proved why they remain pioneers in implementing innovative practices.
The program began with the design and completion of a questionnaire by 11% of the population, which provided valuable insights regarding the residents’ and businessmen’ perspectives on the project and potential issues. Following this, 12 businesses were invited to express their interest in obtaining reverse osmosis filters, with the ultimate goal of reducing the supply of bottled water to their customers. The process was successfully completed with the installation of filters for those interested.
However, the overall plan required as a prerequisite the provision of reliable, real-time information from the municipality regarding the quality of water both in the municipal network and at water kiosks. In this context, the municipality committed to posting the relevant information on the municipal website, a promise that was implemented immediately.
This program aims to develop a practice that can also be adopted by other islands facing similar challenges. Thanks to the impressive mobilization of the municipal authorities, the touching support from Nina Schnabel (who funded yet another similar initiative on a second Greek island), the project can now provide the necessary conclusions.
