A comprehensive action plan for Kalamata

A comprehensive action plan for the coastal and marine environment of Kalamata is being implemented by Aegean Rebreath, the international group Inditex and the Municipality of Kalamata. The program aims to carry out interventions that fall under the strategic action plan for the marine and coastal environment, which was approved by the Municipal Council. These include preventive actions as well as interventions for the depollution and restoration of the local marine environment.

Five main pillars are included in the program, which is expected to be implemented by 2025.
The first pillar involves consultation with the local community and authorities to identify needs and challenges related to the coastal and marine environment, as well as to collect proposals from local key stakeholders. These proposals could be incorporated into the municipality’s strategic action plan for the marine and coastal environment.

The second pillar consists of educational workshops to be conducted in local schools, with content tailored to different educational levels. These programs focus on promoting environmental democracy, individual responsibility and highlighting the added value of the marine environment for local communities and economies.

The third pillar is the implementation of depollution activities in the port area, aiming to highlight the pollution problem and raise public awareness.

The fourth pillar involves conducting research activities to produce evidence-based conclusions about water and sediment quality, as well as the concentration of micro/mesoplastics on the intervention areas.

Finally, the fifth pillar foresees the development of audiovisual material for the entire program, in order to enhance public awareness and ensure the sustainability of the interventions.
