A nationwide research on microplastics on the beaches

For the first time in Greece, we executed thorough sampling for microplastics in 20 areas of the country. A project that, in addition to raising awareness, aimed at producing fundamental data on a global problem that remains unexplored in our country.

A specialized team from our organization visited 20 different points where they methodically worked and collected the required samples. The samples were presented to the Hellenic Center for Marine Research and, through our ongoing cooperation, we attempted to identify the origin of the microplastics. Significant findings emerged both at national and regional level regarding the sources of microplastics and their distribution at several geographical zones.
