Aegean Rebreath supports the efforts against overbuilding in the Cyclades islands

The issue of overbuilding in the Cyclades islands is causing concern and insecurity within local communities. It is no coincidence that in 2023, the highest number of new building permits was issued to island municipalities. At the same time, the problems are multiplying, affecting the daily lives and quality of life for residents as issues like water availability, waste management, and the strain on natural resources become top priorities.

In this context, Aegean Rebreath, along with other members of the Blue Municipalities Network, following an initiative by the Municipality of Thira, signed a letter addressing the need to tackle overbuilding in the Cyclades islands. The letter was sent to the Prime Minister’s bureau and competent ministries, highlighting the “the urgent need to assess the current conditions shaped by overbuilding on the Cyclades islands and to take initiatives to prevent irreversible outcomes, particularly at a time when urban planning is underway on many islands”.

Aegean Rebreath views this issue as a major threat to the sustainability of the islands. It cannot ignore the concerns of local communities or the continuous signs of degradation in the coastal and marine environment. The letter expresses the views of local communities in the best possible way, highlighting the importance of the role played by the Blue Municipalities Network.
