A difficult but productive year

2020 has been a year with many challenges for people everywhere. However, we do feel an obligation to recount all the good work we have done throughout the year, with an eye to thanking all our supporters, partners and volunteers!

Our achievements over the past year are bookmarked by setting up new marine litter collection stations through new municipal and institutional collaborations, and an expanding network of partners. We undertook significant activities throughout Greece and hosted large international networks, giving us ample opportunities to communicate the importance of the quality of the marine environment for our ecosystem and climate, the economy and society. We were delighted to receive the first research data on microplastics and sediment collection through our cooperation with the Hellenic Centre for Marine Research and University of West Attica. Working with schools and universities, we developed awareness-raising curricula for different education levels, something very dear to us. Additionally, through innovation and cooperation with local and national authorities, we made progress on the challenging issues of heavy metals in Syros and the submerged landfill on Andros. We await final results from testing from both sites in the coming year. Finally, we were especially delighted at the many new volunteers choosing to become part of our organization and take part in our coastal and underwater actions.

With all of the above, we can’t but feel optimistic about the year ahead. Having laid down strong foundations, we are confident new partnerships and creative solutions lie ahead. And because of this, 2021 will find us all absolutely ready to work towards our one and only goal- cleaner seas!

We wish all of you a happy, healthy, creative new year!
