A Weekend full of Activities in Corfu

A three-day event full of activities was completed in Corfu, during which we inaugurated our first Marine Litter Collection Station on the island. From the 21st to the 23rd May we carried out a series of actions which included underwater clean-ups, research sampling as well as the removal of ghost nets in the bay of Garitsa and in Alipa in Paleokastritsa.

Our initial optimism when we dived in the crystal-clear bay of Garitsa was quickly overshadowed by the rather bad condition of the seabed in the port of Alipa in Paleokastritsa as the disappointing picture we saw was in full contrast to this landscape of special natural beauty. The layers over layers of marine litter in the seabed of the port did not allow us, despite the intensive two-days efforts of our team, to achieve the results we would like to have. Nevertheless, we are optimistic that with the immediate and effective mobilization of local authorities and residents, this situation can change for the benefit of the island and the marine environment.

We remain in constant communication with the Municipality of Central Corfu and the Diapontian Islands for the provision of technical advice and directions, as the Municipality, is a member of the newly established Network of Blue Municipalities for the protection of the marine environment, and we are looking forward to bold moves and solutions.
